Join Our Team!

Team Basics: No experience is necessary to join our team. We are looking for students interested in electronics, robotics, programming, mechanics, business, project management, photography, media, and marketing. We compete in competitions through the FIRST Inspires program.  We value diversity. Scholarships are available for team member costs.  Our FRC team, the Iron Patriots, is open to all Modesto City School high school students. Not part of MCS? Don’t worry; many schools in the area allow for interdistrict transfer for you to attend our robotics team! The team is a large commitment, as we are a Varsity level team. Students must be mature enough to work independently in a functioning shop, and be able to keep up with their school work throughout the intense build season. Joining the team is a large commitment, we encourage potential students to read the student handbook on our resources page to get a full understanding of the scope and commitment of joining this Varsity team.  The team meets one afternoon a week in the fall semester to gain skills and work on projects to prepare for the build season. Team members meet two evenings a week, all day Saturday and some Sundays during our build season from early January through March. Two multi-day competitions take place in March. Competitions are generally as close as Davis or as far away as Idaho, with the possibility of the World Championships in Houston in April. The students participate in many fundraising events though out the year, mentor local students, assist other robotics teams, and participate in community events. Students on the team have many volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

How to Join:

Applications for prospective Iron Patriot Team members will be released at the end of July. Everyone is encouraged to apply, but we will  we will prioritize new team memberships in the following order:

  1. Incoming freshmen in the Robotics Pathway at Beyer High School

  2. Freshmen and sophomores from Beyer High School and other Modesto City Schools (MCS)

  3. Students from other grade levels within MCS and other area schools

Please note that team membership is limited to a few spots to ensure each member receives ample guidance and support. Interested students must complete an application once it is released and participate in an interview process.

Mentors:

Our team relies on adult mentors for all of our sub-teams. We currently need a programming mentor to work with the students during the build season. We primarily use Java.  We could also utilize engineers to help with project management, CAD design, and execution. We will have mentor onboarding meetings in the fall and again at the beginning of build season.
